Happy Naturopathic Medicine Week!

It’s Naturopathic Medicine Week!!! At the Armstrong Clinic we are pretty pumped about this week as we celebrate the benefits of naturopathic medicine, healthy living and disease prevention. Many of you are familiar with this form of medicine, but others may be wondering just what the heck is ‘Naturopathic Medicine’? For myself, a 'civilian' (aka a non-Naturopathic Doctor) I had many questions! So I turned to my husband, Sean for answers. He’s a Naturopathic Doctor and owner of the Armstrong Clinic here in beautiful Simcoe, Norfolk County!

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. There are various 'modalities' or treatment tools Naturopathic Doctors have at their disposal. These include:

  • Intravenous Therapy

  • Clinical Nutrition

  • Homeopathic Medicine

  • Botanical Medicines

  • Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

  • Physical Medicine

  • Stress Management & Lifestyle Counselling

  • Infrared Sauna

Some of you might also be wondering what the difference between a Naturopathic Doctor and a homeopath. Although homeopaths are regulated in Canada, they do not have the same scope and educational requirements as Naturopathic Doctors. Like a medical doctor, dentist or chiropractor, the Naturopathic Doctor first completes pre-medical studies at university. The naturopathic student then enters into a four-year, full-time medical program at an accredited school of naturopathic medicine. Training includes basic medical and clinical science, diagnostics, naturopathic principles and therapeutics and extensive clinical experience under the supervision of qualified Naturopathic Doctors. Graduates receive the title "N.D." or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. N.D., Naturopathic Doctor and Naturopath are protected titles.

The philosophy of an ND or Naturopathic Doctor is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the root cause of disease. Many of you might be wondering what are some common illnesses and conditions treated by a Naturopathic Doctors. Take a look at this list!

  • Cancer support

  • Digestive Issues

  • Weight loss & management

  • Fatigue & low energy

  • Acne & other skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema

  • Women's health, hormone balancing & menopause

  • Fertility Issues

  • Headaches & migraines

  • Anxiety & stress management

  • Sleep disorders & insomnia

  • Back Pain

  • Pediatric health including ADHD & Autism

  • Blood sugar management

  • Smoking cessation

So why you wouldn’t just go to your regular medical doctor for help? For many patients, the difference in approach to health provides them with new awareness and perspective. By addressing the root cause of the ilness, coupled with the use of natural therapies and education many patients with chronic illness have found relief and benefit.

Our goal at the Armstrong Clinic for Naturopathic Medicine is to provide complimentary care alongside western medicine. This way, it’s the best of both worlds!

For more questions, stop in at the Armstrong Clinic here in Simcoe to talk with one of our licensed ND's.
